Buddhist Monks giving hope in ruined Myanmar
“The monks’ role is more important than ever,” said Ar Sein Na, 46, a monk in the delta village of That Kyar. “In a time of immense suffering like this, people have nowhere to go except to monks.” “Meditation cannot remove this disaster,” he said. “Material support is very important now. Now in our country, spiritual and material support are unbalanced.”

White House: Poor Face Health Risks from Warming
The Bush administration, bowing to a court order, released a fresh summary of federal and independent research pointing to large, and mainly harmful, impacts in the United States from human-caused global warming. The report is online at climatescience.gov, along with a new report updating the administration’s priorities for climate research.
Most of the findings, ranging from the spread of warmth-loving pests to the inevitable loss of low-lying lands to rising seas, are not new. But the report included new projections of how the poor, elderly, and communities with lagging public health and public-works systems will face outsize health risks from warming.
Under a 1990 law, presidents much submit a report to Congress every four years summarizing what is known about impacts of climate change and other global environmental problems on the United States. The last such assessment, undertaken during the Clinton administration and published in 2000 in the early days of the Bush presidency, was attacked by groups and industries opposing restrictions on greenhouse gases. References to it were deleted from some government reports by political appointees in the White House.
Environmental groups sued to force the completion of a new study. In court, the White House contended that a series of more than 20 studies requested by Mr. Bush in 2003 satisfied the 1990 law, but Federal District Court Judge Saundra Armstrong rejected that assertion and said a comprehensive assessment had to be published by the end of May.
Among the reports new conclusions on health: “An increased frequency and severity of heat waves is expected, leading to more illness and death, particularly among the young, elderly, frail, and poor.” It added that deaths from cold would decline, but said uncertainties on both projections made it impossible to characterize the overall risk.
It gave high odds (essentially a two out of three chance) that Lyme disease and West Nile virus would likely have expanded ranges due to warming.
The report gave the same odds that some food- and water-borne diseases will also increase among susceptible populations, but said “major human epidemics” were unlikely as long as public-health systems remained effective.
“This assessment is an example of what federal scientists can and should be doing when they are freed from political interference and allowed to actually do their jobs,” said Kassie Siegel, climate program director for the Center for Biological Diversity, the lead plaintiff in the lawsuit
Senator John Kerry, the Massachusetts Democrat who was lead author of the 1990 law, strongly criticized the White House.
“The three-year delay of this report is sadly fitting for an administration that has wasted seven years denying the real threat of global climate change,” Mr. Kerry said in a statement. “In these lost years, we could have slowed global warming and advanced clean energy solutions, but instead America’s climate change strategy has been at best rhetorical, not real.”

Monkey Fitted with Brain-Controled Robotic Arm
Two monkeys with tiny sensors in their brains have learned to control a mechanical arm with just their thoughts, using it to reach for and grab food and even to adjust for the size and stickiness of morsels when necessary, scientists reported on Wednesday. The report, released online by the journal Nature, is the most striking demonstration to date of brain-machine interface technology. Scientists expect that technology will eventually allow people with spinal cord injuries and other paralyzing conditions to gain more control over their lives. The findings suggest that brain-controlled prosthetics, while not practical, are at least technically within reach. The new experiment goes a step further. In it, the monkeys’ brains seem to have adopted the mechanical appendage as their own, refining its movement as it interacted with real objects in real time. The monkeys had their own arms gently restrained while they learned to use the added one.

Brazil Rainforest Analysis Sets Off Political Debate
It did not help that the scientists’ report, released in January, relied heavily on progressive deforestation, a relatively new measure that is is widely accepted by environmentalists but that Governor Maggi contends is tantamount to lying. The space agency argues that this slower-paced deforestation, where parts of the forest are thinned out little by little rather than at once, can be just as devastating.
The space agency has two systems for measuring deforestation. Prodes, a yearly satellite analysis, measures deforested areas as small as about 15 acres, while Deter, a lower-resolution system, maps areas greater than about 60 acres in real-time, giving law enforcement information to act quickly to stop further destruction.
Holistic politics is not only our future but what will save the world, We need to wake up and care!

Hot Springs — and Life? — on Mars
A stuck wheel in the Martian dust turned out to be a lucky accident for the rover Spirit. As the crippled wheel was dragged along, it dug up a trench revealing a white layer of silica apparently produced by hydrothermal vents like the famous hot springs at Yellowstone. And where there was once hot water, there might have been life. On Earth, the only way to have this kind of silica enrichment is by hot water reacting with rocks,” Dr. Ruff said, and noted that this part of Mars — dubbed Home Plate by the researchers — was a logical spot for the water. “Home Plate came from an explosive volcanic event with water or ice being involved. We saw where rocks were thrown into the air and landed to make small indentations in the soft, wet ash sediment around the vent.” Another of the co-authors, Jack Farmer of A.S.U., said: “On Earth, hydrothermal deposits teem with life and the associated silica deposits typically contain fossil remains of microbes.” The researchers aren’t sure if that’s the case on Mars, because the Spirit rover doesn’t carry instruments that can detect microscopic life. “What we can say,” Dr. Farmer added, “is that this was once a habitable environment where liquid water and the energy needed for life were present.”
20-Year Journey for 15-Minute Fall
He has spent two decades and nearly $20 million in a quest to fly to the upper reaches of the atmosphere with a helium balloon, just so he can jump back to earth again. Now, Michel Fournier says, he is ready at last.Depending on the weather, Fournier, a 64-year-old retired French army officer, will attempt what he is calling Le Grand Saut (The Great Leap) on Sunday from the plains of northern Saskatchewan.
He intends to climb into the pressurized gondola of the 650-foot balloon, which resembles a giant jellyfish, and make a two-hour journey to 130,000 feet. At that altitude, almost 25 miles up, Fournier will see both the blackness of space and the curvature of the earth. He will experience weightlessness.
Then he plans to step out of the capsule, wearing only a special space suit and a parachute, and plunge down in a mere 15 minutes.
If successful, Fournier will fall longer, farther and faster than anyone in history. Along the way, he can accomplish other firsts, by breaking the sound barrier and records that have stood for nearly 50 years.
Breaking the sound barrier..... how is that possible to survive in nothing but a suit....
Busy Students Get a New Required Course: Lunch
BRIARCLIFF MANOR, N.Y. — High school students in this well-to-do Westchester suburb pile on four, five, even six Advanced Placement classes to keep up with their friends. They track their grade-point averages to multiple decimal places and have longer résumés than their parents.
But nearly half the students at Briarcliff High School have packed their schedules so full that they do not stop for lunch, prompting administrators to rearrange the schedule next fall to require everyone to take a 20-minute midday break. They will extend each school day and cut the number of minutes each class meets over the year. Briarcliff currently does not require students to have a lunch period. “Kids who are not eating, or eating under stressful circumstances are not cultivating healthy eating habits,” she said in an interview this week. “We want to send the message that a big part of growing up is how to manage yourself and not just getting good grades.”
Finally schools are getting it! Time to let the mind relax is just as important as filling it with knowledge......

2012 and the end of earth...our sun's twin star.
It has always fascinated me that there were many calenders throughout time and cultures that have predicted the end of the world to happen roughly 2012. There must be some sort of science or upheld belief that supported this reoccurring theme. It surprised me that as i did more and more research into this matter.. some troubling facts started to arise. We all know that the dinosaurs died because of a massive extinction level event. This was due to a massive object smashing into our planet from space. The fall out from this event left the ecosystem barely hanging on. But what amazed me was that this wasn't the first massive extinction event that has happen in our planet's history. Many extinctions has occurred. And not only that but these extinctions happen on a regular time line. The time frame of extinctions happen roughly about every 25 million years. Scientists started to become concerned by this troubling fact. The search was on. What was causing these extinctions events to happen on a regular timeline. The result of this inquiry was NEMESIS. This is the theory that our solar system is not in fact a single star system but a binary system (2 star system). These multi star systems are the galactic norm in the universe. The other star was probably a Red or Brown Dwarf star. (This is a undiscovered failed star), (failed stars are stars that do not have enough material to spark fusion in the core) This failed star orbits at the very reaches of our solar system. The gravity from this star as it passes through the Oort cloud (deep outer asteroid belt) perturbs the orbit of these asteroids and sends them headed straight toward to sun.. (with us in the path). Earth finds its way into a massive shooting gallery of space objects. The next project time of NEMESIS passing through the Oort cloud. 2012! +/- about 100,000 years tho..... Scary stuff..

Trip to Axiom gallery
We took a nice class field trip to the Axiom Gallery. The exhibit was titled...
COLLISION1101:superartificial
It really took advantage of art that was interactive. Some of the pieces interacted both with the viewer(environment) and interacted with itself. A lot of the works had an AI type feel to it.As the world and technology evolve.. so must art. Art in many ways is a reflection of life. That reflection is always dynamically changing with the world around. As our minds change.. creative changes with it. People laughed when photography was used as an art medium. The same happened as people began to use computers to make art. If we can keep an open mind as life unfolds.. then art will lose its borders of judgment. Creativity is freedom.

Quit Smoking with Miracle Pill (Chantix)
I was very skeptical when i first came across this pill.... but i come to find out my father has taken it with great success over the last 2 months. The pill is called Chantix. I asked my dad to write up some of his thoughts on the pill to post on here so any of you interested can get a real person review on it....
Philip Huntley.....
"Only by prescription, the side effects are generally incredibly vivid dreams and a regular tendency to wake up in the early hours of the morning, When I say 'dreams,' I don't mean nightmares, which are very usual using 'The Patch.' I haven't tried any other remedies.
The great advantages of 'Chantix' are that (a) you can't cheat i.e. if you take a smoke you don't derive any pleasure since it works by blocking the nicotine receptors in your brain, and (b) it has some sort of drug element that suppresses the craving.
I took it for two months and got fed up with the dreams/early waking, and the non-reimbursable insurance cost - it's very expensive: but it's been 1 1/2 months since then and I haven't smoked apart from the evening when we all had a cigar to celebrate your Brother's eighteenth Birthday."
worth checking out if you have had no success in the past..

Study Ties Smoking to Social Circles
For years, smokers have been exhorted to take the initiative and quit — use a nicotine patch, chew nicotine gum, take a prescription medication that can help, call a help line, just say no. But a new study finds that stopping is seldom an individual decision.
Smokers tend to quit in groups, the study finds, which means smoking cessation programs should work best if they focus on groups rather than individuals. It also means that a people may help many more than just themselves by quitting — quitting can have a ripple effect prompting an entire social network to break the habit.
This ties into my earlier post on change and the how the brain works if you are interested....

Phoenix Lander Is Ready for Risky Descent to Mars
A spacecraft now completing a nine-month journey from Earth to Mars must survive a fiery, risky descent to the Red Planet to have a chance to scoop up water ice believed buried under an arctic plain.
After traveling 422 million miles since its launching last Aug. 4, NASA’s Phoenix Mars Lander is aiming for a touchdown on Sunday in the unexplored northern regions of Mars. But first, it must survive what its developers call the final “seven minutes of terror” to reach the surface.
“There are many, many risks and uncertainties,” said Dr. Edward Weiler, associate administrator of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration science division. Since the start of planetary exploration, 55 percent of spacecraft sent to land on Mars have failed, he said.
Although the Phoenix lander, a conglomeration of parts from two earlier failed missions, has been tested and rechecked to correct all known design flaws and potential errors, Dr. Weiler said, “there are always the unknown unknowns.”
NYTimes-Biotech Company to Auction Chances to Clone a Dog
Scientists consider dogs among the most difficult animals to clone because they have an unusual reproductive biology, more so than humans. But the company behind the auctions, BioArts International, maintains that the technology is ready, and it is calling the dog cloning project Best Friends Again. It has scheduled the auctions for June 18.
BioArts says it has licensed patents issued in the 1990s after researchers in Scotland cloned Dolly the sheep.

Biofuel Weeds causing havoc
But now, biologists and botanists are warning that they, too, may bring serious unintended consequences. Most of these newer crops are what scientists label invasive species — that is, weeds — that have an extraordinarily high potential to escape biofuel plantations, overrun adjacent farms and natural land, and create economic and ecological havoc in the process, they now say.
Oil Costs and what it means to us
The price of oil per barrel has been on a steady rise everyday. It seems that the price is only going to keep going up as the summer goes on. Most people see this as a very very bad thing. But last night during a meditation a positive aspect came to me.
We as a society and mostly the globe revolve around oil. But now that oil costs are skyrocketing... it is time to rethink out living habits. Suddenly people are beginning to think where they can cut down both in oil consumption but also energy in general. Yes it sucks that it now costs 80$ to fill your tank. But now we are beginning to reshape how we view our energy consumption. Suddenly renewable and sustainable energy is becoming not only mainstream but a potential savior for us. It is no longer just a nice thought to become "green" but a necessary shift. This oil crisis is shaping up to be a blessing in disguise in my opinion.

Wii Fit is the answer. What a wonderful way to combine entertainment with a little exercise innovation. In a world where fitness can be very expensive... this a a great low cost entertaining solution.
"The system costs $90, plus $250 for the basic Wii console. It uses a television and a sensitive “balance board” placed on the floor to present a few dozen activities, from push-ups to yoga, to more entertaining challenges like balance games and aerobic contests. Nintendo is not aiming Wii Fit at people with a serious exercise regimen. Rather, it is meant to appeal to the person busy with work and family who just wants to have fun getting a little toned at home."

Drink Tea!
Tea is Amazing! It not only delicious but its sooooo good for you. Here are just some of the amazing things tea can do for you....
- Help protect cells from the normal, but damaging, physiological process known as "oxidative stress." Although oxygen is vital to life, it's also incorporated into reactive substances called free radicals. These can damage the cells in our body and have been implicated in the slow chain reaction of damage leading to heart disease and cancer.
- Help prevent blood clotting
- Help lower cholesterol levels
- Help neutralize enzymes that aid in the growth of tumors
- Help deactivate cancer promoters
- Help stimulate the immune system
- Help fight against mutagenic agents
- Delay aging
- Help fight high blood pressure
- Help fight against viral and bacterial infection
- Help improve the functions of the digestive and excretory system

Einstein Letter on God Sells for $404,000...
The problem of God, he said, “is too vast for our limited minds.” -Einstein
I thought this was an interesting letter dealing with Einsteins feeling toward god and religion. He was a revolutionary of the world and helped define the very way in which we understand the universe..... but where does god come in? Einstein clearly felt there was no room for God in the world of science...

Return home to the simple life...
I loveeee Boston. But the city life can become too much to deal with sometimes. How can we truly put down our roots into a ground of concrete and pollution. Trees, fresh air, and nature are our soul's true calling. My home is back up in New Hampshire. I went home yesterday for my brother's BDAY festivities. It is so nice to spend time with the people you love. The concept of "family" has never been particularly important term for me most of my life. But in the last 3 years of my life.. i have grown closer to them than i ever have before. They represent the bond we have to connection and love. My family is what keeps my heart filled with hope…..
Even the concept of "home" is an anchor in our lives. We all have different relationships to our homes but regardless, "home" is part of who we are. I come home to New Hampshire and spend as much time outside as i can. Even the air feels different. Coming from the chaos of the city...being out in the woods is a completely peaceful stillness. You can honestly feel all the life around you. Everything from the sounds of the birds to the smell of wet earth. You become humbled in the presence of everything organic. I had a nice walking meditation outside that night. If i don't get a taste of nature at least once a month i go crazy down here. I am going to try and get some field trips going for various classes doing a hike or something like that. Let me know if anyone would be up for something like that...
Here are some pics of last few times up in nh...

Full Moon

Today is th Full Moon. My attention to the moon started when i much younger. The phase of the moon always would affect my moods. My parents even knew to cut back the sugar in my diet around the full moon time because i always became more energetic. Even these days my whole mood changes when the full moon is approaching. I think the very idea of moon worship brings us back to the roots of who we are. The bright glow of the full moon tends to bend our thoughts inward.... giving us both a burst of inner energy and introspective abilities. The moon has been an object of worship for thousands of years in countless cultures. Entire societies were based off of lunar cycles. The moon helped shaped culture from agricultural understanding, calenders, and even fertility ceremonies. The moon represents the subconscious side to our mind. I even notice my dreams become more vivid during the times around the full moon. So if you get a chance tonight... go outside and appreciate the moon in all its glow.

Man Made Black Holes
Sometimes we get too far ahead of ourselves with science. We seeks to create and discover but at what cost? We created the atomic bomb with no real understanding of what its potential was. We didn't even know when we first tested the bomb...that the explosion wave reaction would actually stop or if it would just keep going and destroy the world. As our technologies and hunger for more knowledge grows more and more... a new reality of morals and ethics needs to evolve to. This was a very interesting article i came across in the new york times about the dangers that we could inadvertently create a black hole on earth. This black hole could be created as a side effect to a new particle accelerator that we build in Europe for particle collision experiments. Even if you have no idea what a black hole really is.. I am sure you know that it is not a good thing.

Dreams
I love Dreams. I think there is a lot of power and meaning behind the dreams we have. I try an remember all the dreams i have. The more i learn to recall them...the more they make sense and apply to my waking life some how. I even have reoccurring things in many dreams.
If you are someone who wants to start to keep track of and understand your dreams... I can offer a few suggestions....
* Before you go to sleep, make the intention that you want to remember your dreams
* When you wake up, try not to just jump right out of bed. Slowly bring your awareness to your body. Maybe even just lay there for a minute or 2 and try make the transition from sleeping to waking very gentle
* Keep a little diary or dream journal near your bed so when you wake up and the dreams are still fresh in your mind.. you can jot them down before you forget over the course of the morning and day.
There are a ton of dream interpretation book for sale. Being as we are in the information age.. i keep it simple... i just log onto some websites that offer the same thing... Dream moods is a great one.

Dahn Yoga (Great place to get your yoga feet wet)
Yoga has changed my whole life in a lot of ways. It has taught me so much about myself and the idea that health is so much more then just the state your body is in. Through yoga i have learned a news ways to create health and peace on the mind and spirit level as well. Sadly, yoga tends to be just outside to comfort zone for most people (especially men). Dahn Yoga is the answer. I randomly stumbled across a dahn yoga center a few summers ago. Soon as you walk into the place you feel right at home. The people are all friendly and welcoming. Most importantly... NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY... a wonderful place for beginners who want to see if yoga is for them. Dahn Yoga offers varies types of yoga classes and workshops. I even took my class last year on a field trip from Wentworth. And added bonus is they have a machine there that can show you what your Aura looks like!
There are a few locations in the greater Boston area. Check the website. Here are some highlights from my Wentworth field trip to the Dahn Center.
